Receiving Watches And Warnings Via E-Mail In Real-Time

Anyone who wishes to receive severe weather watches and warnings via email can now get them in real time, and the sign-up is easy! Here are the services we provide, and how you can subscribe to them.

Through your email account or cell phone, all weather advisories can be delivered to your inbox as soon as they are received from the National Weather Service, and rebroadcast by NIU Weather!

Here are the lists you can subscribe to:

forecast: The "forecast" list is a daily weather forecast that is sent out by NIU Weather between 11 AM and noon. This contains a detailed 7-day outlook, along with precipitation and severe weather forecasts for the next 3 days. It also contains non-severe weather and other related statements.

weekend: This list gives you a 7 day forecast from either NIU Weather, or, when no one is on duty that weekend, a local forecast prepared by the National Weather Service. If an employee is available to do the forecast on weekends, then it will be sent out between 11 AM and noon. If not, the National Weather Service forecast will be sent at 5 AM.

hazards: The "hazards" list relays the National Weather Service 7-day hazardous weather outlook for northern Illinois. From the threat of tornadoes to an ice storm to frost and dense fog, it covers the whole realm of bad weather. Expect this bulletin to reach your email box twice a day, at around 6 AM and noon, except during the winter, when you just get one around 6 AM. However, an update could be sent out at any time during rapidly changing conditions.

mobiledevice: The "mobiledevice" list relays all severe thunderstorm, flash flood and tornado watches and warnings for NIU via the National Weather Service. It contains a one-line bulletin, describing the advisory or warning in effect...and then provides a link to their website to click on for full information. Great for Blackberries, Iphones, etc.

storm: The "storm" list relays all severe thunderstorm, flash flood and tornado watches and warnings for DeKalb county. It also relays winter storm bulletins, such as winter storm watches, warnings, and blizzard warnings, as well as emergency messages due to a non-weather, extreme emergency on campus.

nonprecip: The "nonprecip" list relays all non-precipitation advisories for DeKalb county. This includes frost/freeze advisories and warnings, wind chill advisories and warnings, excessive heat advisories and warnings, and high wind watches and warnings.

stormreport: The "stormreport" list relays all damage reports caused by severe storms for DeKalb county. These reports are sent when the Weather Service has time to send them out, after the event is over.

stormreportnil: The "stormreportnil" list relays all damage reports caused by severe storms for north-central Illinois, eastward into northwestern Indiana. These reports are sent when the Weather Service has time to send them out, after the event is over.

hoffmanestates: The "hoffmanestates" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Cook county. There is one problem with this list: advisories for ALL of Cook county are relayed, including those not affecting Hoffman Estates. This is because the National Weather Service does not discriminate what part of the county is under a warning in it's product header, which is the only way we can tell who it is for. When this ability is added sometime in the future, then we'll be able to just give warnings for northern and northwestern Cook county. This list serves the NIU Hoffman Estates satellite campus.

naperville: The "naperville" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for DuPage county. This list mainly serves the NIU Naperville satellite campus.

rockford: The "rockford" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Winnebago county. This list mainly serves the NIU Rockford satellite campus.

loradotaft: The "loradotaft" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Ogle county. This list mainly serves the NIU Lorado-Taft Field Campus.

mchenry: The "mchenry" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for McHenry county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in McHenry county.

kane: The "kane" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Kane county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Kane county.

lee: The "lee" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Lee county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Lee county.

boone: The "boone" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Boone county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Boone county.

lasalle: The "lasalle" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for La Salle county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in La Salle county.

kendall: The "kendall" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Kendall county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Kendall county.

will: The "will" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Will county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Will county.

stephenson: The "stephenson" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Stephenson county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Stephenson county.

whiteside: The "whiteside" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Whiteside county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Whiteside county.

carroll: The "carroll" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Carroll county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Carroll county.

peoria: The "peoria" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Peoria county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Peoria county in central Illinois.

champaign: The "champaign" list relays all severe thunderstorm and winter weather watches, advisories and warnings for Champaign county. This list mainly serves faculty, staff and students living in Champaign county in east central Illinois.

OTHER LISTS

climate: The "climate" list takes the National Weather Service cooperative observer reports sent out each day around 9 AM and sends them to this list. You will see the DeKalb/NIU Geography department observation of high/low/precip/evaporation, as well as those around northern Illinois and northwestern Indiana. This product occasionally gets posted on the "forecast" and "weekend" list, after a major rain or snow event, and will continue to do so at he discretion of the forecaster. earthquake: The "earthquake" list brings the latest reports of earthquakes around the world from the National Earthquake Information Center in Denver, Colorado. This can be erratic due to staffing at the NEIC, and other governmental bodies.

HOW TO SUBSCRIBE

To subscribe to any list, you will need to send an email message to the following address: majordomo@weather3.admin.niu.edu. Keep the "Subject:" line blank. In the body of the message, on the first line, type:

subscribe list

where "list" is the name of the list you want to subscribe to. For example, if you want to subscribe to the hoffmanestates list, send an email with just this line in the body of the message:

subscribe hoffmanestates

Please make sure that you do not send email containing HTML codes; use plain-text only or your request(s) will be rejected!

It figures out your email address, so don't worry about that, and a confirmation letter will arrive back quickly to let you know that your subscription is pending. Follow the rules of the confirmation letter (it will ask you to send a special code back, this is for security measures), and then send it back with the one line of special code.

You can also subscribe to more than one group at once in the same letter, using separate lines, one for each list. For instance, sending an email to majordomo@weather3.admin.niu.edu with the command:

subscribe forecast

subscribe storm
subscribe weekend
subscribe climate
subscribe earthquake

would subscribe you to all 5 lists.

If you subscribe through Groupwise, a great thing to do would be to turn on the "notify" feature on days when bad weather is expected. When you do this, the computer will beep and a dialog box will pop up on the screen when an email comes in. If you don't get much email in a given 8 hour work day, this is a great option.

HOW TO UNSUBSCRIBE

If you're losing your email account or changing it, or going on a vacation and don't wish to get any messages, you should unsubscribe from the list(s) to keep your email box from going over quota or causing problems with your provider, which could cause any subsequent emails to you to be rejected. Send an email to majordomo@weather3.admin.niu.edu. Keep the subject line blank; in the body of the message, type:

unsubscribe list

where "list" is the name of the list you can unsubscribe from. You can also use commas to unsubscribe from multiple lists at once, as in this example:

unsubscribe storm,winter,weekend,lasalle,hoffmanestates,earthquake

This command unsubscribes you from these 6 lists. To re-subscribe in the future, follow the directions starting from "HOW TO SUBSCRIBE", above.
